Ages! is an excellent shareware software package that
advertises itself as ideal for the budget genealogist.
Although this software purports to be ideal for the
low-budget genealogist, it is actually around the same
price as our highest rated software package, Family Tree
Maker. At $35 for the downloadable version, we did feel
that the price was this software's only letdown as it was
otherwise excellent for the beginner or advanced
genealogist. There is a 30-day free trial available
however, so we'd certainly suggest checking this software
out before you commit to buying it ' it's always worth
it!
We were really impressed with the range of features on
offer when a users purchases Ages! The simple and
intuitive user interface means that novice genealogists
feel right at home almost straight away, while
experienced family history researchers can make use of
the most useful features quickly and easily. The 'Facts
Tab' is excellent, allowing users to add new events and
facts to a particular individual or relationship with
considerable ease. The program also supports a wide range
of media additions to your research, allowing users to
add images, photos, movies, sound and digital maps to
enrich your research further. Users can even import
images directly from a camera or scanner using the media
wizard. Users, as with other programs, can also create a
range of charts and reports from their research '
something that we always view as particularly important '
and each of these can be customized to reflect the
particular nature of your research. Finally, all of these
features can be used in public libraries and research
centres without any installation when users employ the
Ages To Go service (using a USB flash drive).
While we were very impressed with the features of Ages!
and felt that its general look and feel was perfect for
the novice genealogist, we couldn't help but feel that
the price charged for this software was a little steep
considering the cost of some of the other software
packages we have reviewed. Family Tree Maker, for
example, our highest rated software package in this
category, costs around the same and provides, in all
honesty, a far greater selection of features. That said,
there is a free trial available with Ages!, so if you
like the sound of this software package, give it a go and
see what you think. Hit the link below to check out what
Ages! has to offer!
