GenBox is a great little software package that allows
users to take advantage of a wide range of useful
genealogical tools, all bundled together in one product.
GenBox suggests that its users get access to a database,
research tool, task manager, data analyzer, chart
producer and report writer for just $29.95. We felt that
we should check out these claims to see whether GenBox
provides everything it says it does, and if so, just how
well it executes them all. One thing to note about GenBox
is that it is available as a download only, so if you
have a slow Internet connection you may need to think
twice before deciding on this product.
GenBox collects together a wide range of genealogical
tools in a way that is no doubt useful to the novice
genealogist. Users can move around the software (and its
different functions) easily using the attractive user
interface. This interface is even better as it can be edited to include, in more accessible
locations, those functions that are more commonly used by
the individual user. We felt like the interface on GenBox
really opens up access to the features on the software
and makes it far easier to use, especially for novice
users. Users can also create excellent quality reports
and charts, which are equally as flexible, and are ideal
for sharing their research with their friends and family.
Users can also group data sets into lists to make them
easier to view. Finally, a powerful search tool allows
users to quickly find a record, even if their family tree
includes thousands of different data entries in multiple
languages.
GenBox certainly makes some pretty bold claims in its
advertising. While the software does indeed combine a
range of genealogical tools, none of those included are
of the sort of quality that we would expect if this were
to rank higher in our reviews. Notably, the only function offered here
that isn't included in our highest rated genealogy
software (Family Tree Maker, by Ancestry.com) is the
access to online databases (although all Ancestry.com users can get
access to this free of charge).
While this certainly isn't a bad software package, we
would advise our users to look elsewhere in our reviews
to get a really high quality set of tools for a price
that is not too dissimilar to that of GenBox.
