Heredis claim that “Genealogy is Changing” and as such, here at No1 Reviews we were intrigued. To get started you can simply download the demo version which, while offering all available features, is limited to 50 individuals. Most users will fill up this capacity pretty quickly and will need to upgrade to be able to continue with their research. At $29.99 Heredis is reasonably priced, competitive with all but the cheapest products in this category.

For your hard earned you’ll get a pretty meaty piece of software with some half decent features to match. Our favourite feature had to be the contextual search which gives you an overview of the events and individuals related to the search you have just carried out.

This means that, with Heredis, you will hardly ever arrive at a dead end as the search will always bring up links for you to hop over to those that may be more fruitful. This said, we did get a bit frustrated, stuck in “research loops” with Heredis just repeatedly suggesting to us the same links over and over again. Experienced researchers will know how to break out of these, but beginners may get stuck pretty quickly. 

Whilst Heredis does boast all the most advanced tools in genealogy research, we couldn’t quite get at what was so innovative about their software, especially as we were not that impressed by some of their more unique tools such as the option to enhance the readability of documents. It must be noted however that Heredis is the only product in this category to be Mac, PC, and Iphone/Ipad compatible.

We were impressed by the efforts of the team at Heredis to make their software so accessible, but were left with the feeling that, through trying to please everyone, they end up satisfying no one. Nevertheless, we do believe it’s important to point out that Heredis do plan to bring out at an Android version of their software in 2015. This would make them the first major family tree software developer to do so and, as such, does represent a significant advance in the industry. 

Due to their wide accessibility, we believe Heredis may well be at the beginning of an upward curve in popularity. As such, they are certainly “the one to watch” in this category. For the time being however, we recommend readers check out one of the products listed in our Top10 as they are generally more established and reliable.
