The Master Genealogist is a software package produced by
the genealogy firm Wholly Genes. The software provides
users with an advanced set of tools to manipulate and
display family research data and produce a family
tree. While new users can check out what the software has
to offer by downloading a free 30-day trial, in order to
have complete access to what the software has to offer
users must purchase either the silver or gold versions.
The silver version contains access to most of the
standard features that will appeal to hobby-genealogists,
while the gold version contains more advanced features
for those who wish to take their research a little
further.
The Master Genealogist has a vast collection of data
manipulation tools, allowing users to overcome common
genealogical research problems to achieve a robust
result. Users can import existing data in the GEDCOM
format, or use the GenBridge technology featured on The
Master Genealogist (which allows users to draw data
directly from other programs). The excellent search
function allows users to perform strong and flexible
searches, ensuring that they can produce results even if
they only search by one search field. The Master
Genealogist also supports a wide range of multimedia
additions to your research and family tree. Users can add
loads of photos, videos, sound bites and digital maps to
your information to create a rich tapestry of family
history information. One of the best elements of The
Master Genealogist is allowing users to create amazing
slideshows of the multimedia that they have found, and
share these slideshows with your friends and family using
shareable CDs. We really loved this feature, and thought
it added to what The Master Genealogist has to offer its
users.
Users can also produce a range of publishable documents
from the data featured on their family tree. They can
create narratives, charts, sheets, books, reports and
more using the data; and all of this happens
automatically using a range of useful functions. While
these reports are pretty good as functional documents,
they really aren't much to look at, and so if this is
what you really want to do with your data, you should
really check out other software providing such options
(such as Family Tree Maker, our highest rated site in
this category).
While The Master Genealogist does have a pretty good set
of features, we do find it a little annoying that users
have to purchase the gold edition in order to have full
access to all that the program has to offer. We also
felt that both the silver version and the gold version
were a little expensive (with the gold version on CD
being twice as expensive as Family Tree Maker, our
leading family history software package). We would
suggest users tried out other, better, software packages
(such as those that feature higher in our reviews), which
are also more reasonably priced. If you still like the
sound of The Master Genealogist however, hit the link
below to check out what it has to offer!
