Editor's Verdict:

Ancestral Quest is a great piece of software that is ideal for both the beginner, and the experienced genealogist. With a host of useful features, tools and publication options we were pretty excited by everything Ancestral Quest offered its users. We were a little disappointed by the lack of free trial available to users of Ancestral Quest, especially as so many similar software packages do offer free trials as standard. That said, we were still excited to give it a go!

Ancestral Quest has an excellent, intuitive layout that is ideal for new users of family history software. We were particularly impressed with the collaboration wizard, which allowed users to import family history data from other websites and software programs using an integrated importing wizard. This clever tool compares existing data with that on the imported files and allows users to select which data sets should prevail where there are potential overlaps. While this may sound a little complex, Ancestral Quest executes this tool with great ease, and we were generally really impressed with how well it functioned. We were also impressed by the level of help and support offered to users of Ancestral Quest. FAQs are available online for all users to read in the hope that they can be useful in solving common problems, whilst users can also use online, phone or email support in order to ask a more specific question. We also liked the AQ2GO function, which allows users to run Ancestral Quest from a flash drive that can be carried around, on any machine running windows. We're not sure how useful this feature is for most users, but for those users who do a lot of their research in public libraries, being able to run a version of Ancestral Quest without installation will no doubt be useful.

Although we thought that the publishing options are a little difficult to find within the Ancestral Quest program (they are hidden away in the 'file' menu within the program), they are simple to use and provide users with a range of different publishing options. Users can generate reports, sheets, charts (of ancestors and descendants), books and more using the data featured in your Ancestral Quest family tree. While a lot of options are available, they certainly aren't the prettiest documents we've seen produced using genealogy software, and we do think they are intended more as technical documents as opposed to publications to share with your family and friends.

Ancestral Quest certainly has a collection of great features that are perfect for both the novice genealogist and the advanced user. As good as these features are, we can't help but feel that this software lacks the polish of some of the other sites that we have reviewed. By all means give this software a go (although it doesn't have a free trial period), or try out one of the other sites in our top ten, such as Family History Maker.
